                     NOT THAT FLAG

The Confederation’s gone, should its flag be flying proudly?
Some Republicans at first were rather wavery.
But most of them concluded as the protests mounted loudly
There aren’t too many votes recalling slavery.

So what does it take to get South Carolina to stop flying the Confederate flag over its Capitol? Apparently a demented young racist murdering nine black people studying the Bible in a church.

Jeb Bush, and Lindsay Graham were quickly supportive of moving the flag to a museum. Other Republican presidential candidates were more hesitant. Scott Walker was aboard only after the South Carolina governor proposed moving the flag. And Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Mike Huckabee, were among others who, fearful of annoying voters in a forthcoming primary state, preferred to leave it to South Carolina. All fo these fervent business supporters were left looking ridiculous when Walmart, Sears, Amazon  and eBay announced they would no longer sell the flag.

Satirists leapt on the issue.. The New Yorker’s Andy Borowitz suggested that a majority were “tired of explaining things to idiots” – such things as climate change, gun control, and “why a flag that symbolizes bigotry has no business flyimg over a state capitol.” Where might it be removed to? The Onion has an answer: put it on a  run-down trailer – from where, of course, its die-hard owners would refuse to move it.

For cartoonists this was an irresistible topic.. One mocked candidates who claimed that flags are part of our political inheritance -- defined as “Political Expedience.” A white man proclaims: “My people dies because of this flag.” A black man reminds him: “So did mine.” The flag is run up the flagpole to see who salutes – and it’s the KKK. A series of flags is shown: the Confederacy, the Swastika, the Washington Redskins.

The permutations on the theme of racism in America are endless. They will not end even when that flag is moved from the South Carolina Capitol.;.
